Area athletes run Boston Marathon

Staff Report

Four area runners were among the field of 15,606 who completed the 105th Boston Marathon Monday. A laurel wreath and a prize of $80,000 awaited Lee Bong-ju of Seoul, South Korea the winner of America's most prestigious marathon.

Loren Osborn, Jr. of Burlington Flats, was the top local runner, finishing with a time of 2:47:15, a pace of six minutes and 23 seconds. He finished 276th overall, and 251st among men.

John Sovocool of Richfield Springs, 45, finished in three hours and five minutes and two seconds, but was on pace for his best marathon ever before running into trouble at the 21-mile mark.

"I had just come over Heartbreak Hill which goes from the 19 to 21-mile mark, and I was on pace for a 2:50, which would have been my personal best, but all of a sudden my legs felt like someone wrung them together," said Sovocool, who completed his third Boston Marathon. "I still don't really know what happened but it slowed me down. I thought it might take me out of the race, but I had put in way too much training to stop."

Sovocool has already qualified for the New York Marathon in November, and is thinking about running a marathon in Antarctica in January.

"The goal is to run a marathon in every continent," Sovocool said. "If I can pull the finances together, I'll probably go."

Sovocool and Cooperstown's Scott Curtis ran a marathon in Greece last summer.

Cooperstown Schatzi Hall was the top female finisher in the area, finishing in an impressive time of three hours 29 minutes and 37 seconds.

Helen Risney, also of Cooperstown, completed the Boston Marathon for the second consecutive year, finishing in a time of four hours, nine minutes and nine seconds.
